I can not believe that there is such a wealth of information on the subject of Discus fish and general fish husbandry located within 25 miles of exit 51B off the 485.
Eric, where have you been?
If you ever wanted to learn 5, 10, 20 years worth of information on a subject but don't want to put in the time I would suggest that you go to the next meeting of the SOUTHERN DISCUS STUDY GROUP. It will take you a lot of research to catch up with what you missed yesterday, but you will be miles ahead of those who will miss the second workshop.
Eric, thank you once more for an excellent kick off!!!!! Everything was well organised and went very smoothly, considering your participants. I do not think anyone really missed the beefheart demo that much.
Please pass along big thanks to Walter Wu for coming down from Raleigh. He gave us a very interesting talk and it was great to have him join us.
So that is what a pair of fish worth as much as a new car look like, huh?
Again, great time, the info on meds and their uses made the day for me. So much great information and discussion, an excellent "Discus 101".
"Gentlemen, congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of government training. "

All, I have finally had a chance to post on the seminar between work travel and the hatchery. I would like to thank everyone who attended and participated...I think there was some great topics discussed and the sections on meds and nutrition were well recieved. I was lucky enough to have Walter Wu come down from Raleigh to speak on his trip to Hong Kong and Wayne Ngs Discus farm. For me that was a highlight.
I would like to thank CAAS for their donation and all the support form the attendees to help me cover costs if possible. I truly appreciate it.
For thise who missed it, I think if you talk with the attendees, there was something for everyone....discus keeper or not. I am planning some special things in the upcoming months including:
March or April - Special group buy through Kenny's Discus...the premier importer of healthy, quality Asian discus in the US today. Kenny and I are good friends and he is going to extend some special offers of me to pass on....this will be a great chance to get some great stock if you are interested.
April - Hakari frozen food special ....I have worked out a deal for a delivered price from Hakari at $8 for 16 oz bloodworm, plankton, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp....we need to get a total order of 125 packs. If you are interested please contact me and let me know how many packs you will tank...this will save you $5-$10 a pack.
Again, I want to thank the CAAS for their support and hope tp see more people attend in the next coming workshops....
I will post some pics when I get back this weekend.....
I agree with the other participants, fantastic job Eric. It was a well organized, info packed, and a very enjoyable experience.
Eric did a true discus 101 with very interesting and nuanced info. Plenty for novice aquarists like myself and experienced fishkeepers alike, quite a feat.
The meds portion was worth the day alone. The nutrition portion was fantastic too. I'm hitting the highlights, because there was so much good stuff! Eric distributed multiple handouts on special issues such as use of salt for medication purposes, meds, nutrition, ect.
There were some entertaining media presentations too. Eric showed an oldschool video he made with his family. I'd never seen discus breeding and raising their fry, very cool. Walter's presentation about his trip to Hong Kong was top notch, giving a real impression of the area, including the unbelievable aquarist section of the city. A real treat. For me, a real primer on photography too, excellent pictures!
In short, it exceeded my high expectations.
I will not be missing any of these meetings!
Eric, I think alot of the information was relevant and of interest to general fishkeepers.
I encourage anyone to attend, if you are interested in discus or not. Beware though, Discus may "pull you in!"
Those flat fish are becoming an obsession for me, and I don't even have any yet!
